Let us not waste any more time waiting for change; instead, let our collective voice be heard, and together, we can create a safer and healthier community for all.
Dr. Philip Shaw Chuan Wang
Dr. Philip Shaw Chuan Wang, a distinguished Doctor of Chiropractic, has dedicated 23 years to serving the Flushing and Northern Queens community.
His educational background includes graduating from Baruch College, CUNY, for his undergraduate studies, and obtaining his Doctor of Chiropractic degree and Master of Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, where he successfully passed the national board examination.
Since the year 2000, Dr. Wang has been an integral part of the Flushing community, actively contributing to public health and well-being.
Over the past two decades, Flushing has experienced rapid development, transforming into a thriving and bustling area.
Recognized by Channel 1 News as the second busiest street, Main Street in Flushing owes its vibrancy to the hard work of new immigrants and the second generation of migrants, which has significantly boosted commercial activities.
However, with increased population and foot traffic, various challenges have emerged, including street congestion, waste accumulation, misdemeanor crimes, homelessness, and communication issues with senior residents.
Navigating Flushing, particularly during weekends for Dim sum, now requires at least a 30-minute traffic delay. The proliferation of one-way streets and numerous bus lanes poses challenges for parking and navigating the area.
Unfortunately, recent policy changes, such as the Bail reform law and budget cuts to the police department, have not contributed to a decrease in crime but instead elevated the levels of misdemeanor crimes, making the streets more perilous.
Moreover, issues like overflowing garbage disposals, overloaded street garbage cans, an increasing homeless population, and the prevalent smell of cannabis on Roosevelt Ave warrant immediate attention. Our senior residents, who have played a crucial role in the community’s growth, now require enhanced healthcare and recreational services.
We must address these issues promptly and collaboratively. As a united community, we must voice our concerns and work together, transcending partisan boundaries. Procrastination in addressing these challenges only allows them to escalate.
Let us not waste any more time waiting for change; instead, let our collective voice be heard, and together, we can create a safer and healthier community for all.
Key Policy Position
1. Fostering Comprehensive Community Safety: Embracing a collaborative approach, we aim to enhance community safety by fostering strong partnerships between law enforcement, organized civilian groups, and residents. Together, we’ll work towards creating a secure and vibrant environment that preserves the well-being and cohesion of our neighborhoods.
2. Rethinking Cash Bail Laws: Recognizing the shortcomings of the current bail reform, we advocate for a reconsideration that prioritizes the prevention of recidivism and ensures justice for victims. Striving for reforms that strike a balance between fairness and community safety, addressing the need for a more effective and just system.
3. Advancing Equity in Specialized High School Admissions: Upholding a commitment to professionalism and fairness, we support the merit-based foundation of specialized high school admissions. As we maintain rigorous exams, we also recognize the importance of addressing underrepresentation through targeted programming and initiatives, ensuring every student has opportunities for success.
4. Mitigating the Impact of Excessive Bus Lanes: Taking a firm stance on the adverse effects of excessive bus lanes and stops on our small business community. We are committed to assertive action to ensure accessible public transit without compromising the economic vitality of neighborhoods like Flushing. Preserving the prosperity of local businesses is non-negotiable.
5. Responsible Marijuana Regulation: In the pursuit of responsible marijuana regulation, we advocate for the designated areas for smoking and retail activities, ensuring a thoughtful consideration of the needs and concerns of both marijuana users and non-smokers within our community. Community input will be pivotal in determining suitable locations, fostering an inclusive and harmonious environment for all residents.
6. Highlighting the constructive impact of legal immigrants on our community’s vibrancy and economic vitality, we contend that the current policy of allocating taxpayer funds to house illegal migrants in hotels is fraught with issues. This approach leads to excessive waste and lacks the necessary community involvement and oversight, jeopardizing the integrity of our resources. Our stance calls for a reassessment of this policy, advocating for responsible resource management, heightened community engagement, and increased oversight for a more effective and transparent approach.
7. Culturally Sensitive and Affordable Housing for All: Spearheading the development of culturally sensitive affordable housing to meet the diverse needs of our population, we recognize the importance of extending our commitment to additional programs for seniors. Beyond housing, we aim to implement living assistance programs and address language barriers, ensuring our senior community enjoys comprehensive support and inclusion in our shared vision for a thriving, culturally rich environment.
8. Transforming Juvenile Justice: Unveiling flaws in the current system that overlook accountability and consequences for crimes involving minors, prompting the need for a comprehensive legal framework overhaul. Advocating for a system that emphasizes responsibility, justice, and tangible repercussions for perpetrators, our vision is to replace these deficiencies with a more robust approach that actively supports victims and ensures real consequences.
9. Shoplifting significantly undermines our community, directly impacting safety, eroding trust, and contributing to increased crime rates. This illicit activity not only affects individual shop owners but also imposes economic strain on local businesses, resulting in concrete consequences such as job losses and reduced services. Addressing shoplifting is crucial for safeguarding community integrity and ensuring an environment conducive to sustained prosperity.
